Pricing checkpoint

Use these live numbers to decide whether package size, ingredient cost, labor, or markup needs another pass.
Cost per unit/package$2.95
Target margin price$5.18
Suggested wholesale price$6.11
Suggested retail price$9.29
Gross margin estimate68.2%
4. Cost and pricing
How it is calculated

Batch cost = ingredients + packaging + labor + overhead. Cost per unit = batch cost / package count. Target margin price = cost per unit / (1 - target margin). Wholesale = target margin price × (1 + wholesale markup). Retail = wholesale × (1 + retail markup).

Ingredient and packaging costs together

The calculator combines ingredient costs, packaging cost per unit, labor cost per batch, and overhead cost per batch so cost per package is visible.

What this calculator includes

  • Ingredient, packaging, labor, and overhead cost inputs.
  • Batch cost and cost per unit/package.
  • Transparent margin, wholesale, and retail markup fields.
  • CSV export and printable product sheets.

How to use it

  1. Start with the closest product preset or a blank draft, then replace it with your own recipe.
  2. Enter batch yield, package weight, serving size, and recipe ingredients.
  3. Review the label preview, ingredient statement, and allergen helper.
  4. Add cost inputs, check pricing, then print or export the files you need.

What to review before commercial use

  • Review ingredient naming and nutrition data against supplier or lab values when you have them.
  • Check final ingredient order, allergen wording, and the labeling rules that apply in your market.
  • Confirm net weight, serving size, shelf life, and storage instructions against the real product.
  • Review your process, packaging, and local commercial requirements before you print final materials.

Pricing formulas stay visible

Suggested prices use target margin, wholesale markup, and retail markup fields. The calculation panel explains the formulas so the numbers are easy to challenge.

Useful for farmers markets and online shops

Small producers can compare jar, bag, pouch, bottle, or piece economics without setting up a backend system or spreadsheet template.

FAQ

Is this a legal food-label compliance tool?

No. It helps you estimate and prepare label-ready information, but final labels should be reviewed against the rules that apply to your product, location, and sales channel.

Where is my recipe data stored?

The tool runs in the browser. Saved drafts use local browser storage, and exports are generated on your device unless you choose to share the files yourself.

Does the nutrition math use a live database?

No. The MVP uses a typed local ingredient dataset with estimated nutrition per 100 g. You can override nutrition values for custom ingredients when you have better data.

What happens if some ingredient costs are missing?

The tool shows a partial state and lists missing ingredient costs instead of presenting a misleading complete batch cost.
