Cost and pricing

4. Cost and pricing

Add packaging, labor, and overhead so cost per unit and price targets reflect the real package.

Pricing checkpoint

Use these live numbers to decide whether package size, ingredient cost, labor, or markup needs another pass.
Cost per unit/package$1.48
Target margin price$2.65
Suggested wholesale price$3.17
Suggested retail price$4.82
Gross margin estimate69.3%
4. Cost and pricing
How it is calculated

Batch cost = ingredients + packaging + labor + overhead. Cost per unit = batch cost / package count. Target margin price = cost per unit / (1 - target margin). Wholesale = target margin price × (1 + wholesale markup). Retail = wholesale × (1 + retail markup).

What the preview includes

The label preview shows product name, serving size, servings per package or batch, calories, total fat, saturated fat when available, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and sodium.

What this calculator includes

  • Estimated nutrition per serving and per package.
  • Serving size and servings per package.
  • Ingredient statement draft sorted by entered amount.
  • Common allergen helper with editable wording.

How to use it

  1. Start with the closest product preset or a blank draft, then replace it with your own recipe.
  2. Enter batch yield, package weight, serving size, and recipe ingredients.
  3. Review the label preview, ingredient statement, and allergen helper.
  4. Add cost inputs, check pricing, then print or export the files you need.

What to review before commercial use

  • Review ingredient naming and nutrition data against supplier or lab values when you have them.
  • Check final ingredient order, allergen wording, and the labeling rules that apply in your market.
  • Confirm net weight, serving size, shelf life, and storage instructions against the real product.
  • Review your process, packaging, and local commercial requirements before you print final materials.

How estimates are calculated

Ingredient amounts are normalized to grams where possible, nutrition is summed for the batch, then divided by serving size. Missing weights or custom ingredients are called out instead of hidden.

Use it before final review

This is useful for recipe planning, early packaging drafts, and buyer conversations. Final commercial labels still need review against applicable requirements.

FAQ

Is this a legal food-label compliance tool?

No. It helps you estimate and prepare label-ready information, but final labels should be reviewed against the rules that apply to your product, location, and sales channel.

Where is my recipe data stored?

The tool runs in the browser. Saved drafts use local browser storage, and exports are generated on your device unless you choose to share the files yourself.

Does the nutrition math use a live database?

No. The MVP uses a typed local ingredient dataset with estimated nutrition per 100 g. You can override nutrition values for custom ingredients when you have better data.

Can I add custom nutrition values?

Yes. Each ingredient row can include custom values per 100 g for calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and sodium.
